Recent Events at Bedford Congress Hall

A well filled Bedford Congress Hall greeted Bandmaster Andrew Launn and the band as they got the weekend celebrations off to a cracking start with William Gordon’s brilliant festival march Salvation’s Song.

The compere, Andrew Blyth, Assistant Territorial Music Director UK Territory, swiftly settled in and expertly led the Saturday evening festival, adding many interesting observations on the programme content and the various musical compositions.

Sue JohnsonSpecial guests for the evening were vocalist Sue Johnson, brass soloist Gary Fountain and percussion star Jonathan Whitmore, an ISB member at 16, who has recently transferred to Bedford Congress Hall and will undoubtedly be a huge asset to the corps.

There were many superb performances during the programme and probably every listener will have their own special favourites but it was good to hear such old favourites as Silver Threads on the cornet from Gary Fountain; Czardas on the xylophone from Jonathan Whitmore and To God Be The Glory from the Bedford Congress Hall Band.

Sue Johnson who has vast experience, having featured as a soloist throughout the Army world and on various CD recordings, captivated the audience with her easy manner and warmth of style. Especially striking, were Somebody Believed and Make Jesus Your Friend, both consummate presentations of modern gospel songs…an object lesson in how to “put over” an effective Gary Fountainmessage in song.

The old gospel favourite, Standing on the Promises, dressed in a new, smart and up-to-the-minute new suit by composer Douglas Court, received a first class and exhilarating performance from ISB member Gary Fountain alternating between the cornet and flugel horn.

Jonathan Whitmore was in scintillating form with flying sticks in a xylophone romp through Joyous Rhythm based on the old SA favourite Ever Near to Bless and Cheer…with an odd bar or two of George Gershwin Jonathan Whitmore(D.I.X.I.Even know...) thrown in for good measure; a real crowd pleaser!

In a quieter and more reflective vein, Pastoral from Gary Fountain, Broken Pieces from Sue Johnson and A Little Prayer from Jonathan Whitmore were all presented in a thoughtful and reflective manner adding much blessing to the evening. Colonel Bob Halliday added his own distinctive Bible presentation which, as always with the Colonel, gave the congregation food for thought and, of course, some delicious humour.

Throughout the evening the Bedford Congress Hall Band were in excellent form with Beyond Blue Horizons and a choice and musicianly performance of the popular You Raise Me Up.

All in all a splendid evening, and a great credit to organizer Bandmaster Andrew Launn, rounded off in rip-roaring style by the Bedford Congress Hall Band in the big band arrangement of Power Divine.
